Boeing, one of the global leaders in aerospace technology, is set to open an electronics manufacturing and avionics assembly facility in Bengaluru.

The aircraft maker is investing Rs 1,152 crore at the tech hub, which will majorly focus on data analytics, internet-of-things, avionics, design, testing, and research, IANS reported. The facility will be the company’s second largest tech hub after its center in Seattle in Washington, the report added.

“We have allotted 36 acres of land for Boeing India to set up the facility in the state-run Aerospace Park at Devanahalli near the airport in north Bengaluru,” a senior official was quoted as saying by the news agency.

According to the report, a meeting between Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Boeing India President Pratyush Kumar took place to discuss the key points of the project.

To utilize the maximum capacity of the project, the company will also create 2,600 direct jobs when set up and commissioned, the official told the news agency.

The project also acquired the due approval early this month “for land allotment and other statutory clearances,” the official added.

The project, which is yet to begin, is expected to complete its first phase during the first half of 2019, according to the report.

“The additional facility at our India Engineering and Technology Centre here will enable us to develop skills of our aerospace engineers and frontline factory workers,” the company had stated last year in September, as per an earlier report of IANS. That was when Boeing announced its plans to expand its engineering operations in Bengaluru.

“We are committed to build an innovative aerospace ecosystem in India for our global growth in productivity, efficiency, cost advantage and quality,” Boeing India President Pratyush Kumar was quoted as saying at that time.

Karnataka Udyog Mitra Managing Director BK Shivakumar had told the news agency earlier that Boeing will also make aircraft components and subsystems at the new center for civil and military versions.

Headquartered in Delhi, Boeing’s India operations include an office and a Boeing Research & Technology Center in Bengaluru, field service offices in Mumbai, Hindan, Rajali and New Delhi. Boeing subsidiary, Jeppesen—a provider of flight navigation solutions—is established in Hyderabad. Another subsidiary, Continental Data Graphics (CDG) in Chennai, is also expanding its footprint in the country.
