Celebrating the love of mother’s recipes, My Amma Samayal, is an upcoming Malaysian reality show on Indian cooking that features mothers and children as participants. The show is based entirely on Indian cuisine, and organizers claim it is the first one of its kind in the world.
The preliminary round of the reality show, which will be conducted at Meru in Klang and Ipoh during Sept. 22-24, will feature eight mother-child teams cooking Indian food for the judges using the ingredients provided. The top-rated chefs will proceed to the further rounds, leading up to the two-day final that will be held in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, from Oct. 13.
Celebration of Mom’s Love and Indian Recipes
Ramesh M Gesan, the founder and CEO of organizer Ace Arena ventures, said his mother inspired him to start the show.
“I recall working long hours into the night and I would receive a call from my mother telling me to come home for dinner. That to me was special, to come home after a long day at work into my mom’s kitchen and delighting myself in her cooking, there’s nothing quite like it,” Gesan said, Malay Mail Online reported.
“We have set a new precedent by hosting a cooking challenge by getting both the older and younger generation to share the kitchen.”
Gesan added that reality shows like this will encourage Indian youngsters to cook, ensuring that traditional recipes remain on the menu forever.
The basic theme of My Amma Samayal has been taken from MasterChef, the pioneer cooking reality show franchise created by Franc Roddam in 1990 in the United Kingdom. Gesan believes My Amma Samayal will be the beginning of many inspiring reality shows exclusively for the Indian community.
The winning team will get RM20,000 (about $4,700), while another RM50,000 (about $12,000) will be distributed as complementary rewards.
Global Telecast
Two Indian channels, ZEE TV and Makkal TV, will telecast the show in 30 countries, including Malaysia.
The reality show is organized by Ace Arena ventures in association with Mydin Hypermarket and the #sukusukuseparuh campaign, the Malaysian Health Ministry’s initiative to develop healthy eating habits among citizens.
