$5.5 Million Baroda Prophet Carpet

A 150 year old carpet commissioned in India to decorate the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad in Medina was sold for almost $5.5m at a Sotheby’s auction in Doha.

The red and blue rug, known as the Pearl Carpet of Baroda, has three large round rosettes that are embedded with almost two million natural seed pearls and 350 carats of diamonds, as well as sapphires, rubies and emeralds. It was commissioned by the Maharaja of Baroda, Khande Rao Gaekwad in the mid 1860s.
