PRESS RELEASE Finals in New Jersey on August 16, 2008 July 29, 2008 – The 2008 State Farm South Asian Spelling Bee (www.southasianspellingbee.com) concluded its 8 city tour this past weekend with the last two events in the Bay Area and Los Angeles areas, with a total of 6 winners announced.
In Los Angeles, Samantha Wathugala of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA was the regional champ and the first and second runners up were Bhavika Joshi of Fullerton, CA and Anjali Agrawal of Fort Mohave, AZ. In Bay Area, Matthew Evans of Albuquerque, NM was the Regional champ and the first and second runners up were Debnil Sur of Sunnyvale, CA and Arjun Manimaran of Santa Clara, CA. The winners received cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200 respectively from Makemytrip.com. Children upto 14 years of age were eligible to participate and the contests saw spellers of even 6 years of age compete and make it past a few rounds. The top two winners plus one parent each from every city will be given an all expenses paid trip to NJ on August 16 for the FINALS. The contest is being co-sponsored by Western Union and Makemytrip.com and will be telecast globally on Sony Entertainment Television-ASIA.
