2.1 Million Child Deaths

India has the worst rate of child survival in the world, according to a UNICEF report.

Nearly 2.1 million Indian children under the age of 5 died in India in 2006, mostly from starvation or common diseases, almost five times the infant mortality rate of China.

Nearly a quarter of the Indian population is classified as poor, which is defined as people getting less than the minimum number of calories necessary for survival.
