Western Union “Family” Gives $92,000 to Four Indian Non-Profits

The Western Union Foundation, together with Western Union employees and Agents, donated a total of $92,000 to help support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in India. The India Giving Circle was supported by the
Western Union “Family”, which included, Agents Paul Merchants, Ltd. and Weizmann Forex as well as Western Union employees in both the United States and India. Employee and Agent donations were matched dollar-for-dollar by the Foundation.

“Since 2001, the Western Union Foundation has granted more than $1.2 million to NGOs throughout India,” said Luella Chavez D’Angelo, President, Western Union Foundation.

“As part of Our World, Our Family®, the India Giving Circle shows the value and impact of a true funders collaborative.”

The $92,000 in funding will be split evenly among four NGOs. Pratham serves underprivileged children across 21 Indian states, and is focused on the education of young children. Community of Resource Organization (CORO) provides literacy and empowerment training to women and youth living in the slums of Mumbai. Child Rights and You (CRY) partners with other organizations to understand and champion the rights of children. And India Sponsoring Foundation (ISF) works with organizations that target marginalized groups, providing communication assistance and project development.

David Schlapbach, Executive Vice President & General Counsel at Western Union and Chairman of the Western Union Foundation Board, recently presented a check to Pratham Founder Dr. Madhav Chavan. While receiving the check, Dr. Chavan said, “Pratham, like Western Union, is all about networks. Western Union has a strong network of Agents serving people who want to send money and we have large networks of young people who want to teach, and children who want to learn. The coming together of these networks for the benefit of the children is a great and rewarding experience. We are looking forward to an association with Western Union not only in the United States but globally, and we anticipate a very successful working relationship.”

In recognizing the need for helping communities around the world, in 2008, the Western Union Foundation awarded grants to 276 organizations in more than 75 countries and territories, totaling approximately $9.1 million in grants. The grants supported causes from natural disaster relief to fostering educational opportunities in communities around the world.
