Outsourcing news operations overseas is being pitched as one solution to the crisis in America's newspaper industry.
Dean Singleton, CEO of MediaNews Group Inc., publisher of 54 dailies, including The Denver Post, says the group is exploring outsourcing in every aspect of its operations, including copyediting, design and editorial. "In today's world, whether your desk is down the hall or around the world, from a computer standpoint, it doesn't matter."
"One thing we're exploring is having one news desk for all of our newspapers in MediaNews ... maybe even offshore."
Says Singleton, "Fond memories of dead newspapers will do nothing for our communities.''
Presently pre-production work for MediaNews' papers in California is being done in India, a move, he said, reduced costs by 65 percent.
