MP Govt Cancels Admission of 107 ‘NRI’ Students in Medical Colleges

Madhya Pradesh government has cancelled admissions of 107 MBBS students, who were selected under the NRI quota, but were not Non-resident Indians. The government informed the Jabalpur High Court on Nov. 29 that 94 per cent of those given admissions under the NRI category were dismissed after irregularities were brought to the authorities’ notice by aggrieved students.

The students who met the cut-off percentage required for admission but were not given seats, said that vacancies were “sold” to ineligible students during the mop-up round of MBBS admissions and in NRI quota.

Justices Ravi Shankar Jha and Nandita Dubey on Nov. 11 ordered: “Director of medical education should immediately seize the entire record related to admissions made by all private colleges in the mop-up round as well as the admissions made with respect to NRI students.”

After the petition was filed by Priyanshu Agarwal and four others alleging sale of vacant NRI seats, the court told the director of medical education (DME) to submit a report in a week regarding such admissions in government and private medical colleges. The DME found that admissions given to 107 out of 114 students under NRI quota in 2017-18 were illegal. The aggrieved students alleged that those who could not get admission through the general quota due to low marks were admitted through the NRI quota in exchange of money, and that non-Madhya Pradesh domicile students were given admission in the mop-up round.

NRI students are required to submit details of their passport in their National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) form but only one had given such details, the Times of India quoted social activist Vinayak Parihar as saying. Parihar was the whistleblower on the NRI quota admission matter. He wrote to the vice chancellor of Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University (MPMSU), DME and DGP seeking an inquiry into these admissions.

Aurobindo Medical College, Index Medical College, Amaltas Medical College, RKDF, Chirayu Medical College and People’s medical college were the respondents in the case. The next hearing is on Dec. 11.
